Sterol synthesis : chemical synthesis of 3 beta-hydroxy-5 alpha-cholest- 7-ene-9 alpha-carbonitrile

3 beta-Hydroxy-5 alpha-cholest-7-ene-9 alpha-carbonitrile was obtained via hydrocyanation of 3 beta-acetoxy-5 alpha-cholest-8-en-7-one by diethylaluminum cyanide. The resulting 9 alpha-cyano-7-ketone was reduced with sodium borohydride to 7 alpha-hydroxy-compound. These compounds were characterized by infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectral measurements.
