Evidence for a contribution by the intestinal wall to the serum cholesterol of the rat

Charles A. Lindsey Jr. and Jean D. Wilson

Department of Internal Medicine, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, Texas

Rats were fed cholesterol in order to block hepatic cholesterol synthesis, and their intestinal lymph ducts were cannulated. Experiments with these rats showed that cholesterol synthesized in the intestinal wall enters into the circulating cholesterol pool. The quantitative significance of this source of serum cholesterol has not been established.

Supplementary key words cholesterol • serum • lymph • biosynthesis • intestinal wall • lymph duct cannulation • rat • Dgr7-cholestenol
