The diagram depicts the involvement of apolipoprotein (apo) A-I molecules in the initial steps of the reverse cholesterol transport pathway. Fully lipidated ApoA-I molecules in mature HDL particles promote efflux of cellular cholesterol by the aqueous diffusion mechanism. In contrast, incompletely lipidated ApoA-I molecules remove cellular phospholipid and cholesterol by plasma membrane microsolubilization (See Gillotte et al., p. 1918.)
