About the Cover

Cover Figure

The HDL recepter SR-BI is expressed on the apical surface of the visceral endoderm of the yolk sac in wild-type (+/+) embryos after 12.5 days of development (top panel, red immunofluorescence). SR-BI faces the maternal circulation and may be involved in delivering nutrients to the fetus. No SR-BI is observed at the corresponding locatino in homozygous null mutants (-/-, bottom panel). The expression of thrombomodulin (green immunofluorescence) identifies the endothelia of the vitelline, or embryonic, circulation. Specimens were prepared with the assistance of M. Penman and B. Trigatti. The scale bar represents 20 µm. (See Hatzopoulos et al., p. 495.)
