About the Cover

Cover Figure

Physical cholesterol domains develop in the plasma membranes of arterial smooth muscle cells during the early development of atherosclerotic lesions in cholesterol-fed rabbits. Prior to their formation, the membrane bilayer thickness increases until a saturating concentration of cholesterol in the membrane is exceeded, at which point the cholesterol phase separates, forming tail-to-tail cholesterol "bilayers" in the plane of the cell membrane.
