Electron micrograph of the apical region of absorptive epithelial cells from the duodenum of a newborn suckling mouse whose intestine is deficient in apolipoprotein B expression. Enterocytes along the sides of many villi were characterized by abundant endoplasmic reticulum (arrows), often containing second-step triglyceride-rich particles within the lumenal space (open arrows) that are the same size as nascent chylomicrons assembed by wild type enterocytes (x24,000) (See Hamilton et al., p. 1543.)
