The figure illustrates the importance of the lung as the major site for the production of 27-oxygenated steroids in the body and the role of the liver as the major eliminator of these products under normal conditions. (The figures for the uptake of 27-oxygenated steroids were obtained from Lund et al. 1996. Aterioscler. Thromb. Vasc. Biol. 16:208-212.) The illustration was adapted by Eric Pesanelli from Fig. 7 of the article by Babiker et al. (See Babiker et al. p.1417.)
