About the Cover

Cover Figure

COVER: Growth of human cholesterol gallstones in model biles supersaturated with cholesterol: a small gallstone before incubation (upper left) and after incubation (upper right) in model bile. The white spots are accreted cholesterol crystal plates. The lower left electron micrograph shows the inner structure of the gallstone before incubation, and illustrates tangential layering of cholesterol plates at the surface. The lower right micrograph is a higher magnification of one of the spots of deposited cholesterol cyrstals after incubation, and illustrates that growth of gallstones is focal on the tangential layered original surface of the gallstone. (See van den Berg et al., p. 189.)
