COVER: Model of the N-terminal 17% of apolipoprotein B (apoB-17) bound to a nascent VLDL-like particle. The three-dimensional structure of apoB-17 was created from the crystal structure of lipovitellin using the program MODELLER. A segment of the surface of a 1,000- diameter particle is shown in yellow. The N-terminal -barrel region of apoB-17 (green) protrudes from the surface. Regions beyond the -barrel are involved in the interaction of apoB-17 with the particle surface. These include part of the -helical domain (blue) and the C-terminal -sheet domain (red) of apoB-17. Phospholipids are shown in orange. The image on the right is rotated 90 degrees from that on the left. This figure was created using MOLMOL. (See Herscovitz et al., p. 51.)
