COVER: A trilayer model for molecular arrangement of the 13 nm lamellar phase in human ceramide:cholesterol (HCER:CHOL) mixtures. In this "sandwich model" it is proposed that fluid domains are located in the middle layer containing the unsaturated linoleic moieties of HCER1 and HCER4. Adjacent to the middle layer, a gradual change occurs from a liquid to a crystalline phase. The localization of the fluid phase led us to propose that highest permeability is expected to be located parallel to the basal plane of the lamellae in the fluid domains. (See Bouwstra et al., p. 1759.)
