About the Cover
COVER: Snapshot of the molecular dynamic simulation of the glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraether lipid membrane of marine crenarchaeota. These nonextremophilic archaea are ubiquitous in the ocean. A key step in their evolution from their hyperthermophilic ancestors was the adjustment of the membrane fluidity to cope with the much lower temperature of the ocean. This was achieved by making a kink in one of the biphytanyl chains by the formation of a cyclohexane ring. (See Sinninghe Damste et al., p.1641.)
