COVER: Lipid rafts (blue bilayer) are specialized membrane domains that contain high concentrations of cholesterol, sphingomyelin, and gangliosides. They represent a less fluid state than the surrounding bulk plasma membrane (gray bilayer). A variety of proteins partition into lipid rafts, giving rise to rafts of different protein and lipid composition. (See Pike p.655.)
