COVER: Skin from APOC1+/+ mice lacks sebum production as a result of atrophic sebaceous glands. This figure shows a hematoxylin-phloxine-saffron staining of the skin from APOC1+/+ mice (bottom) transplanted with skin from wild-type mice (top). Note the different appearance of the sebaceous glands: light pink color surrounding the dark-pink circles in wild-type skin (top) is absent in APOC1+/+ skin (bottom). We revealed the mechanism behind the phenotype of the APOC1+/+ skin: apoCI-FFA binding in plasma decreases FFA availability as a substrate for sebum production. (See Westerterp et al., p. 1353.)
