About the Cover
COVER: Relationship of cardiolipin content and composition to electron transport chain (ETC) activities in normal mouse brains and brain tumors. The best-fit relationship for each ETC complex and cardiolipin composition was calculated in the R statistical programming environment and was expressed as a quadratic surface. Lipids were analyzed in highly purified mitochondria isolated from brain of C57BL/6J and VM inbred mouse strains, and from a diverse group of brain tumors derived from these strains. The brain tumors include astrocytoma (CT-2A), ependymoblastoma (EPEN), microgliomas (VM-M2 and VM-M3), and a neural stem cell tumor (VM-NM1). The data provide evidence linking cardiolipin abnormalities in tumors to impaired energy metabolism and to the cancer theory of Otto Warburg. (See Kiebish et al., p. 2545.)
