COVER: Facilitatory and regulatory roles of transmembrane glycoprotein CD36 (SR-B2) in fatty
acid uptake into myocytes. At sarcolemmal lipid rafts, CD36, in interaction with peripheral
membrane protein FABPpm and intracellularly with FABPc, facilitates the entry of fatty acids into the cell. Short-term regulation (i.e.,
minutes) of fatty acid uptake occurs by reversible intracellular recycling (vesicular
transport) of CD36 from endosomal storage to the sarcolemma, as triggered by changes
in the frequency of muscle contraction or by plasma insulin. Long-term regulation
of cellular fatty acid uptake occurs via changes in CD36 gene transcription, mediated
by fatty acid-induced PPAR activation. (See Glatz & Luiken, p. 1084.)...Show more
