COVER: In the absence of RA, most promoters are not occupied by RARs and a pool of RAR is
present in membrane lipid rafts. After RA addition, the extranuclear pool of RAR activates
p38MAPK (a), which translocates into the nucleus and phosphorylates MSK1 (b). Then
MSK1 phosphorylates histones (c) and RARs at a serine located in the LBD (d). Subsequent
to conformational changes, the cyclin H subunit of the CAK sub complex of TFIIH is
recruited (e), allowing the phosphorylation of the NTD by the cdk7 kinase (f) and
the subsequent dissociation of coregulators such as vinexinb (g). Finally, phosphorylated
