On The Cover: The extracellular signaling lipid, sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), is
taken-up by cells and reutilized through a dephosphorylation-phosphorylation-dephosphorylation
cycle. Plasma membrane PLPP3 (phospholipid phosphatase 3) dephosphorylates extracellular
S1P to sphingosine, which enters cells and is rephosphorylated. The regenerated S1P
is dephosphorylated a second time by SGPP1 (S1P phosphatase 1) at the endoplasmic
reticulum to route sphingosine into complex sphingolipid synthesis. See article number
